Personality

At a first glance, it's easy to mistake Euphemia for your typical airhead princess, whose only defining qualities are being sweet and naive. After all, she’s one of the kindest characters in the anime, and her main goal in life is to make those she loves happy. She’s also lived a fairly sheltered life in the past, and unlike her sister, she has not undergone serious military training nor actually fought in a battle.

However, there is much more to Euphy than meets the eye. She is not content being a princess (or sub-viceroy) in name only; she wants to be more than a figurehead, to instead be someone who can change things for the better. She recognizes that the Japanese in Area 11 are unhappy, and she wants to make life better not only for them but for her long-lost siblings as well. That's why she comes up with the plan of the Specially Administrated Zone of Japan: a place where everyone can live as equals, so that Zero - Lelouch - doesn't have to fight for Japan's freedom anymore.

One of her most notable characteristics is her impulsiveness. She often acts without fully thinking through the consequences of her plans; she’s run onto a battlefield multiple times in an attempt to stop the fighting, she picks her knight in the heat of the moment without consulting anyone, and she announces her plans for the SAZ during the middle of the Ashford Academy school festival. Her intentions are usually good - to end fighting, to get people to respect Suzaku, and to establish a zone of equality, respectively - but her methods of going about doing so can be troublesome for others.

In addition, she’s also filled with a great amount of self-doubt. In part because of her firm desire to be able to create change, she’s very disheartened by her realization that neither her older sister nor her brother take her seriously as a political figure. She's also worried that she's not partiuclarly remarkable as a leader; both Lelouch and Schneizel are more intelligent, Cornelia is stronger, Clovis was gentler....she often doubts her own abilities.

She tends to be overly critical of herself, however. While she’s not as smart as some of her older siblings, such as Lelouch and Schneizel, she isn’t stupid, either. She’s able to figure out Zero’s true identity after the hotel-jacking incident, despite the fact that Lelouch was supposedly dead at the time. In fact, she's the first person to identify Zero solely by putting together the evidence.

Most notably, however, Euphy is the type of person who will stand up for what is right. She doesn’t take well to the racist attitudes in Area 11, slapping a man who was insulting Suzaku during their first meeting. She's a pacifist by nature as well. She doesn't get involved with the fighting until she is forced to do so by Lelouch's geass; otherwise, all of her attempts to intervene were in the hopes of preventing further bloodshed.

In a world free from war, she would be a playful girl who adored her family and lived as normal a life as possible while being a princess. As it is, she tries to take her responsibilities as a member of the royal family as seriously as possible; she gives up her education to take the position of sub-viceroy of Area 11, and she’s the one who fights to make that position a meaningful one, instead of simply a title. She truly wants to make the world a better place: one where nobody has to lose the ones they love, and one where everybody can keep smiling.
